The Serenade in C, neo-classic Schubert-Biedermeier divertimento written with emergency haste during endless labour on the Big One (Second Concerto for Orchestra), shares some of its features — namely geometric rigour applied to tags of cliché loved both with and without irony — though its intention and effort tie at the opposite pole.
